Bethel records sweep of North Rock Creek
The Bethel Wildcats and Lady Wildcats earned a road sweep over the North Rock Creek basketball squads Friday night.
The Lady Wildcats dominated the Lady Cougars 69-34 before the Wildcats clawed their way to a 57-47 win.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats jumped to an early 8-0 lead over North Rock Creek. Jaylon Gordon scored half of the eight points in that opening two-minute spurt.
The Cougars’ Carter Harvey then got hot, scoring 10 of North Rock Creek’s 12 first-quarter points and brought the deficit to 13-12 after the opening frame. He hit back-to-back treys during the run.
The Wildcats righted the ship and emerged with a 28-20 lead at the half. John Gordon scored 10 first-half points to pace Bethel.
The scrappy Cougars weren’t done and fought their way back in the third quarter. With 2:59 left in third, Harvey hit one of two free throws to give North Rock Creek its’ first and only lead of 32-31.
However, Bethel responded. Back to back three-pointers by Ryan Depuy and Gage Porter hoisted the lead back up to 37-32 and the young Cougars had no answers down the stretch.
Bethel took a 43-34 lead into the final quarter and increased the advantage by as many as 14 points in the fourth. Devin Acklin hit his second bomb of the game, with 2:39 left, to give the Wildcats a 55-41 lead.
Porter led Bethel with 17 points, while Jaylon Gordon added 11. John Gordon finished with 10 points and Ryan Depuy chipped in eight.
North Rock Creek’s Harvey led all scorers with 22 and Diego Garcia scored 14. Garcia scored all 14 of his points in the second half.
Both Bethel and North Rock Creek are at 6-4 on the season.
BETHEL 69, NORTH ROCK CREEK 34 (Girls)
A big third quarter propelled the Lady Wildcats over the home-standing Lady Cougars. Bethel led 11-7 after the first quarter and took a 23-20 lead into intermission. Kelsi Wood and Kennedy Gregory led the way for Bethel in the first half. Wood finished with seven first-half points while Gregory netted six.
The Lady Wildcats turned up the heat, both on defense and offense, in the third quarter and sprinted to a 46-27 lead after three quarters of play. Bethel outscored North Rock Creek 23-7 in the frame.
Bethel poured it on with an identical 23-7 fourth-quarter run.
Bethel’s Gregory led all scorers with 20 and freshman Parker Stevenson collected 13 points. Wood finished with 11.
North Rock Creek’s Kate Masquas led the Lady Cougars with 12 points.
The Lady Wildcats improved to 6-4 on the season while the Lady Cougars fell to 2-7.
The North Rock Creek squads host Sasakwa Saturday. The girls will tip at 5 p.m. with the boys to follow at 6:30 pm.
Bethel will play host to Dale Tuesday night.
