Asher boys fall to Fort Cobb-Broxton in regional finals

Brian Johnson

MOSS – Class A third-ranked Fort Cobb-Broxton outscored the 17th-ranked Asher Indians by a 20-6 count in the fourth quarter to capture a 50-42 victory and a Class A regional title Saturday night at Moss High School.

Asher, 18-10 on the season, led 36-30 heading into the fourth quarter before Fort Cobb-Broxton rallied for the win.

"We had a six-point lead at the 7:00 mark of the fourth quarter. Ft Cobb got their shooters around some screens and nailed three treys,” said Asher boys' head coach Scott Hamilton. “Once they got the lead, they pulled the ball out and we had to foul. They hit 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch."

The loss overshadowed a double-double performance from the Indians' Patch Hamilton, who collected 18 points, including twp treys, to go with 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots. Mike McDonald followed with 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in a losing effort.

"They (Ft. Cobb-Broxton) have played in the Class A state finals for five consecutive years. So they have a tremendous amount of successful playoff experience,” Scott Hamilton said. “We had a great game plan and took them to the wire. One positive is that we get to play in the area tournament again this year."

Asher will face Roff in a Class A area elimination game Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bethel High School.
